Leon Starker completed a B.Sc degree with Chemistry and Maths as well as the Higher Education Diploma
at Stellenbosch University. During his student years he studied singing with Prof. George van der Spuy and
sang in the Stellenbosch University Choir.
He joined Bellville High School as a Science teacher in 1990 and started training their senior choir from 1991.
Both the school's senior and chamber choirs took part in local eisteddfods and national choir competitions, regularly
obtaining highest honours. The chamber choir won the Prague International Choir competition under his direction.
At the end of 2003 Leon became the conductor of the Pro Cantu Youth Choir.
Leon has completed the Advanced Diploma in Choral Conducting (cum laude) in 2005 and was awarded
an M.Mus in Choral Conducting by the Nelson Mandela Metropole University in Port Elizabeth in 2011.
In addition to the Cape Town Youth Choir, he also conducts the DF Malan School Choir
and the St Cyprians Girls Choir. Leon is regularly invited to act as a clinician at workshops and seminars and as adjudicator at eisteddfods and
competitions.
Leon's day job is Database Manager at a financial services company. He is married to Louise
(a music teacher) and they have three daughters.
